We wanted to DJ on the radio, but getting on a local commercial radio station was next to impossible. So we decided to take matters in our hands. In 1998, we were introduced to Dr. X, a man who built his own radio transmitter and was pumping 6,000 watts on the frequency 91.9 fm out of his one bedroom apartment in Queens, NY. The coverage was ALL of the 5 boroughs, parts on New Jersey, and the western end of Long Island.

The arrangement was simple, we agreed to pay $50 an hour to broadcast The Wonder TwinZ Show on Friday nights from 10pm - 12 midnight. Eventually, we expanded the programming on the station by buying up the 8pm - 2am time slots Monday - Friday. We then turned around and sold 8pm - 10pm & 12am - 2am to other DJs at $150 per hour. And just like that, The Wonder TwinZ show moved to 5 nights a week (Monday - Friday // 10pm - Midnight).

But getting other DJs to join was not as easy as it sounds. Dr. X agreed to allow us to do our show LIVE from his apartment every night. However, all of the other shows needed to be prerecorded. Plus, Dr. X did not want to meet any of the other DJs. So in order to get the shows from the others DJs, we would meet them every week in the parking lot of Wendy’s on Queens Blvd in Sunnyside. To get new DJs to join the station’s roster, we would buy ads in the public notice section of the Village Voice newspaper. When DJs called we would explain to them that the cost of having a show was $150 per hour, the show must be prerecorded, and that they could not come to the radio station (or even know where it was located). LOL, no nothing strange about that. After about 100 phone conversations like that, we usually ended up with 2 or 3 DJs that said “Sure, sounds good to me. When can I start?”

The Wonder TwinZ show aired on 91.9 fm from 1998 - 2002. The show came to an end when we made the transition to Sirius Satellite radio. During those 4 years on 91.9 fm, The Wonder TwinZ show had tons of guest appearances and played plenty of HipHop records that were never heard before or again.

Below is a large collection of archives from The Wonder TwinZ show on 91.9 fm. These are not all of the episodes, but it is every one that we could find. Its pretty amusing to listen to these old shows and hear how our on-air personalities evolved over time. In the first few episodes, we were literally using headphones as microphones.
